Aston University Student Laptop FAQs
Why is the University providing these laptops?
Aston University has provided these laptops to enable students to work anytime, anywhere on a high-performing machine and to ensure that students are not disadvantaged and unable to access on-campus facilities.
Do I have to have a laptop?
No. It is up to you whether you accept the laptop and bag, but these were purchased for you while studying at Aston University. No cash, refund or alternative is offered.
Do I have to pay for the laptop?
No. The laptop is provided to you by the University to assist you with your studies.
Do I have to return the laptop at the end of my studies?
No. The laptop is yours to keep beyond your use at Aston University.
I already have the laptop. Can I sell this one?
No. The laptop is provided by Aston University to support you with your studies. As such, you are expected to use it for these studies.

Should I back up my data?
Can I print to the university printers from this laptop?
Yes. You can set up uniPRINT on your device. See details here.
You can upload your document to the print queue from your print account: https://myuniprint.aston.ac.uk/user. From here, choose the web print option on the left-hand side menu, upload your document and go to a printer to print your document using your uniCard.

How long is the Warranty?
3-years of Premier Support is included, covering hardware and software (software support is for software supplied with the laptop by Lenovo, including Windows 11).
If you experience a hardware issue with your laptop, log a call with the Lenovo call centre for an engineer to be sent to your address to make repairs.

Is the laptop insured?
No. You will need to arrange your own insurance cover.
How much is the laptop worth?
Devices purchased by Aston University are at special educationally discounted rates.
The approximate retail value for an equivalent model would be £1,400-£1,500.
Is Windows installed?
Yes, Windows 11 Home is installed and licensed. Enter your details during the Windows startup and complete the startup process to activate the license.
Is Microsoft Office installed?
Is anti-virus installed?
Yes. Windows Security is included as standard within Windows 11 Home.
Is BitLocker enabled?
No. BitLocker is not enabled as standard. However, the laptop is capable, and BitLocker is easy to activate. Find out more by clicking here.
Please ensure you store the recovery key safely. Data stored on the laptop will not be recoverable without it.
Is there monitoring/tracking software on the laptop?
No tracking or monitoring software is installed. It is the standard Lenovo Windows 11 Home installation with no additions.
