Do I have to have a laptop?

Do I have to return the laptop at the end of my studies?
No. The laptop is yours to keep, even after you’ve finished using it at the University of Northampton.
Is there monitoring/tracking software on the laptop?
No. We do not install tracking or monitoring software on your laptop. It is the standard Lenovo Windows 11 Home installation, with no additional features.
Is Microsoft Office installed?
No. We do not install Microsoft Office; however, as a student at the University of Northampton, you are entitled to a free Office 365 student license. Please click here to find out more.
Does the University of Northampton IT support the laptop?
No. The laptop is your personal device and does not belong to the University.
How long is the Warranty?
Three years of Premier support are included, which encompasses both hardware warranty support and support for any software supplied with the laptop by Lenovo, including Windows 11.
If you experience a hardware issue with your laptop, log the problem with the Lenovo call centre. We will then send an engineer to your address to make the necessary repairs.

Is Microsoft Windows installed?
Yes, Windows 11 Home is installed and licensed. You need to enter your details during the Windows startup process and complete it to activate the license.
Is anti-virus installed?
Yes, Windows 11 Home edition comes with Windows Security as standard.
How long does the battery last?
The laptop includes a 47 Wh Rechargeable Li-ion Battery, which supports Rapid Charge Pro (charging up to 50% in 30 minutes). Battery run time is dependent on how you use the laptop; however, we expect you to get 6-8 hours of everyday use.
MobileMark® 25: up to 7.75 hr with 622 performance score @ 250 nits.
JEITA 3.0 (Video/Idle): up to 6.22 hr / 11.1 hr @ 200 nits.
Local video playback: up to 10.96 hr @ 150 nits.
I already have the laptop. Can I sell this one?
No. The University of Northampton has equipped you with this laptop to support your studies. You should use it for these purposes.
Why is the University providing these laptops?
Will the laptop be insured/covered for accidental damage?
Yes. The laptop has Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) for a period of three years. As part of the ADP One service, you can claim once for a single repair during the three years from September 2025. Should I back up my data?
Yes. During your time studying at the University, you will have access to a Microsoft Office 365 account to assist you with your course studies, including access to a OneDrive account with a 1 TB storage limit. Please save your work to your Microsoft OneDrive area, as this is the secure location to store your files. OneDrive offers a convenient way to store, access and share files and documents from anywhere with an internet connection. For extra security, we recommend setting up two-factor authentication on your account.
Can I print to the university printers from this laptop?
Yes, you can print from your laptop to the University printers. You can find instructions for printing on the University printers. They are also included in the student Ask Us FAQs under the printing section. If you experience any difficulties printing, contact the UON Help Desk.
